A Merry Christmas from the Law and Policy blog

Christmas Day, 2020

This wretched year nears its end.

And there probably has not been a year in the modern history of the United Kingdom – perhaps even in the history of the United Kingdom itself – which has been more eventful for law and policy.

But a highlight for me has been reviving this blog and doing a daily post, and so I thank you all for reading and supporting this blog.

A Merry Christmas you lot, and we will see each other on the other side.

(And I hear someone has delivered a ‘Deal’.)

  1. Merry Christmas! And thanks for your devotion to explaining matters constitional at such a time. Normal hostilities resume after the holiday I hear 🎅🐧🎄🦌🎉👍

  2. Possibly the first PM in history to celebrate a deal which is worse than the deal the nation already had!

  3. Merry Xmas to you, and thank you for your blog. I’m a lay person so I won’t pretend I understand everything you write about, but you have done a great deal to re-assure me that I’m not completely bonkers and many of the things believed were actually true, and corrected me when they weren’t.

  4. Thank you so much for all your information and clarification. I read your blog with great interest!
Have a very good Christmas and we will see you when battle commences! We will need you!
    🎄🥂🍷☃️⭐️

  5. One of the little highlights of my online year has been discovering this blog. Thank you, David, and a very merry Christmas to you!

  6. Many thanks for all your analysis over the past year.
Merry Xmas, wishing for a better year in 2021.
    Kind regards

  7. Happy Christmas. Enjoy the day and forget everything else going on! Thanks for your wise words – see you in 2021.

  8. And a very Merry, Peaceful, and Safe Christmas to you and yours, David.

And thank you for your dissections of what’s been going on with all these political performances.

  9. Thank you for being the voice of reason. I find your blogs are a very refreshing read after years of consuming spin.

Finding you (via James O’brien on LBC) is the only good thing to have come out of this Brexit debacle.

  10. Merry Christmas David,

You may not make the news any more palatable, but you help us understand the issues – in the sort of depth our current politicians can’t or won’t.

Hoping to read much more analysis from you in the New Year.

Particularly on the looming constitutional crisis following the Holyrood elections.

  11. And someone has delivered a Deal.
Hallo! A great deal of steam! The pudding was out of the copper. Oh, a wonderful pudding! Bob Cratchit said, and calmly too, that he regarded it as the greatest success achieved by Mrs. Cratchit since their marriage. Mrs. Cratchit said that now the weight was off her mind, she would confess she had had her doubts about the quantity of flour. Everybody had something to say about it, but nobody said or thought it was at all a small pudding for a large family. It would have been flat heresy to do so. Any Cratchit would have blushed to hint at such a thing.

    Happy Christmas, David!

  12. Happy Christmas 🎄 Many thanks for your blogs, they really do help and offer sturdy guidance. Have a wonderful day.

Christmas should be a time for Claret not clarification! Trust Johnson to try and steal Christmas from some.

  13. Merry Christmas and thanks for all you do.
We depend on you reading all that stuff so that we don’t need to.
Looking forward to getting your take of the ‘Christmas Deal’

  14. Well…
Many thanks for your perception and good humour; it’s just about kept me sane!
Hope you have a very Merry Christmas well away from a certain document!

  18. Happy Christmas and thanks for the sense that you have distilled throughout the year! Also enjoyed your sporadic appearances on podcasts.

  19. Thank you so much for your measured explanations it’s made these exciting times a lot more intelligible .
Happy Christmas and all the best for the coming year.

  20. Thank you for your always informative and well-considered posts. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

  21. Thanks for your unrivalled commentary. And further thanks for keeping the posts short, easy to read, and amusing.

  22. Thank you for guiding us through the tortuous machinations by this government in the name of Brexit! Happy Christmas and hopefully a better New Year.

  23. Thank you David. The value of a blog that applies logic and reason to challenge the current Kafkaesque state of Western democracy cannot be overstated.

Catch up in the other side.

    Best wishes

  24. Thank you for helping me to understand what has been happening to me, my friends, family and my country.
Without your explanations, analysis and options I fear I would be lost amongst the lies, the chaos and spin.
Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

  25. Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to you too David. Lets hope 2021 is a significant improvement on 2020. 2021 does have some interesting prime factors (47 and 43) so I am hoping, rather vainly, that that will help:).

You have been a rare voice of sanity and helped me increase my understanding of Law. Thank you

  26. Many thanks for your efforts in providing these insights. They are invaluable given the paucity of forensic journalism available in the MSM these days. All health for 2021!

  27. I really appreciate this blog. Personal blogs of this type seem to be in decline, so it seems a little old-fashioned, but in a thoroughly good way.

Twitter has been invaluable as a source of information on Brexit, if – and it’s a bit if – you know where to look, and when to stop. The site as a whole is toxic and not conducive to good mental health. The expression ‘doomscrolling’ pretty much sums it up. So it’s good to be able to read your analysis here instead.

The well-moderated comments section, with trolls and ranters firmly excluded, is a treasure in itself.

  28. Thank you for sharing your insights each day—as a non-lawyer, I appreciate your clear, jargon-free, logical and measured analyses of current issues in public law in general and Brexit in particular.
Hope you get some respite from it all ovver the holiday period!
