Apologies and publication schedule update

23rd June 2023

I hope all of you had a happy midsummer* – and now it will be another year before we get this much sunlight again.

My website had some unexpected problems, and it has been offline for a couple of days for repair and so on – and for this I apologise.

I have thereby taken some time to work on some long-delayed longer pieces for you.  These essays should be ready soon. I am sorry for the delay.  Researching and writing original detailed long-form content is not as easy as I sometimes fool myself into thinking it is.

I am also considering moving to a new publication schedule, of posting stuff here when there is something worth posting, rather than aiming to post once every weekday.

Sometimes this may mean a number of posts on a day, or a few weekdays between posts.

It also should mean fewer typos.

(Well. We can always hope.)

I am also thinking through the relationship between this site and the Substack.  At the moment I am usually publishing the same content on both.  But I am wondering if there should be divergence.

Let me know your response to any or all of the above by replying what you think in the comments below – I will read the comments though not necessarily publish them, and mark any comments which are “not for publication” accordingly.

I am especially anxious that those of you who are kind enough to support this site via Patreon and PayPal should feel that you are getting something in return.

  1. I’m always interested in what you have to say and if you don’t publish on slow news days (or are busy with something that can’t be done quickly) that’s fine by me. Thanks.

    1. Seconded.

(I always felt trying to publish something every day was ambitious. Ensuring you have a sustainable schedule for commentary is very sensible.)

  2. I’m always interested in what you have to say and will welcome whatever you throw at me in whatever format.

  3. Thanks for the stimulation and sanity to you deliver to us all.
I don’t have strong views on the channel(s) you use, but have a preference for a single channel rather than more than one.

  4. I tend to agree with the last comment re a single channel, but I would welcome the use of a dedicated channel for the more profound entries. I would suggest though, a pointer on the main channel when a new entry on the secondary channel has been made.

  5. I love your content and very much enjoy reading it and occasionally commenting. I would be disappointed if you moved it all behind a paywall, but I also appreciate that you have a living to make.

I wish you well in future endeavours and hope to continue reading your fine work.

  6. For your free blog, I don’t think you owe any apologies for downtime.

George R R Martin, now there’s a man who owes me an apology, or at the very least an explanation.

  7. I’m happy to receive your thought provoking insights in whatever way you find best. Though instead of a few on one day and maybe a few days without anything I’d prefer, if reasonable, for you to try to juggle your posts to even out the supply – to avoid getting a few on what for me maybe a busy day.

  8. I have to say, I prefer substack as medium – due to idiocy, I managed to sign up for both Patreon and Substack – I follow more people on substack, so would prefer (selfishly) for you to post longer pieces there…
